Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure in the Southeast, urging residents to back the administration and dismiss claims of neglect as major road projects reshape the region.
Speaking to journalists Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Nine Mile Corner in Enugu State, Umahi inspected the ongoing 264km dual carriageway project linking Nassarawa, Makurdi, and Nine Mile, totaling 528km when doubled. Valued at roughly $1 billion (₦1.5 trillion), the project, handled by China Habo, spans five sections: three in Benue State and two in Enugu. Umahi praised the contractor’s quality and pace, saying, “I came ready to quarrel but found nothing to complain about — instead, I commend China Habo highly.”
Umahi highlighted the project as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to the Southeast, a region often vocal about marginalization. “President Tinubu has remembered the Southeast very well, and we have no reason to complain,” he said, calling for unity over sentiment. “We will change the narrative in the Southeast, educate our people, and take them straight to the center, where Mr. President has already started taking us.” He expressed confidence that Tinubu would see the projects through, urging residents to silence detractors and embrace the administration’s efforts.
China Habo’s work, part of Nigeria’s $2.8 billion external borrowing plan for 2025, underscores reliance on foreign partnerships, though local content policies ensure community involvement. Umahi’s optimism contrasts with ongoing challenges like flooding risks in nearby Ogun State and security incidents in Kogi, highlighting the need for holistic governance to complement infrastructure gains.
